Install & Activate QuickBooks Desktop 2024: Full Walkthrough

Before you start: four things to have ready
Most installation problems we help with on live chat come from skipping the preparation, so take two minutes here first.
- Your codes. QuickBooks asks for a license number (15 digits, written as 4-4-4-3, for example 0000-0000-0000-000) and a product number (6 digits, written 3-3). Both are in the license PDF attached to your TaxUSA order email.
- The installer for your exact edition. Pro Plus, Enterprise and Enterprise Accountant each have their own installer, and codes only work with the edition they were issued for. The download link in your email always matches your order; our QuickBooks Desktop 2024 download guide explains where else to find the official files.
- A supported computer. Intuit supports QuickBooks Desktop 2024 on 64-bit Windows 11 and on Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022. It still installs on Windows 10, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the safer base. The PC needs an Intel or AMD (x86) processor of 2.4 GHz or more — ARM-based Windows laptops are not supported — 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended) and about 2.5 GB of free disk space plus room for your company file. Intuit also lists Google Chrome as a requirement. Full details are in our system requirements guide.
- A Windows administrator account and about twenty minutes with a stable internet connection.
Step 1 — Download and check the installer
Save the installer to your Downloads folder rather than running it straight from the browser. Before opening it, right-click the file, choose Properties, then the Digital Signatures tab: a genuine QuickBooks installer is signed by Intuit Inc. If there is no Intuit signature, do not run it.
Step 2 — Run the installer and enter your codes
Close QuickBooks if an older version is open, then double-click the installer. Accept the software license agreement and type the license and product numbers when asked. Copy them from the PDF carefully — the usual culprits are the digit 0 and the letter O, or a stray space at the end of a pasted number.
Step 3 — Choose the right install type
This screen decides how QuickBooks is set up, so read it rather than clicking through:
- Express — the right choice when QuickBooks will be used on this one computer and the company file stays on it.
- Custom and Network Options — use this when the company file will be shared with other computers.
If you pick Custom and Network Options, the installer then asks how this computer will be used:
- "I'll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer" — a normal workstation.
- "...and I'll be storing our company file here so it can be shared over our network" — a workstation that also hosts the shared file.
- "I will NOT be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer" — a computer that only stores the file; this installs the QuickBooks Database Server Manager instead of the full program.
If you bought a multi-user license, our 3-user setup guide walks through the hosting side in detail.
Step 4 — Activate and confirm it worked
Open QuickBooks. If the activation window does not appear on its own, go to Help → Activate QuickBooks Desktop and follow the prompts.
To confirm, press F2 anywhere in QuickBooks. The Product Information window shows your license number followed by the word ACTIVATED. If you see that, you are done. Take a screenshot of the window and keep it with your license PDF.
Step 5 — Install the latest release
Intuit ships maintenance releases for QuickBooks 2024. Go to Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop, open the Update Now tab, click Get Updates, then close and reopen QuickBooks to install them. In an office with several users, every computer should run the same release.
Step 6 — Open or create your company file
- Starting fresh: choose Create a new company and follow the setup interview.
- Coming from an older QuickBooks version: make a backup first (File → Back Up Company → Create Local Backup in the old version), then open the file in 2024. QuickBooks offers to upgrade it. Once upgraded, the file will not open in the older version, which is why the backup matters.
Fixes for the problems we see most
- "License number or product number is invalid." Check that the installer edition matches the codes (Pro Plus codes do not activate Enterprise), then retype the numbers by hand instead of pasting.
- Error 3371 ("Could not initialize license properties"). Download the free QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit, open Installation Issues and run 3371 Error Fix, then reopen QuickBooks and activate again.
- The installer stops halfway or will not start. In Tool Hub, run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool from Installation Issues — it repairs the Windows components QuickBooks depends on — restart the computer and run the installer again.
- Activation cannot reach Intuit. Confirm the computer's date and time are correct, that a firewall or security suite is not blocking QuickBooks, and that the network allows modern secure connections (Intuit requires TLS 1.2).
- QuickBooks opens and then closes. Tool Hub's Program Problems → Quick Fix my Program resolves most of these.
If none of that works, send us the exact error text or a screenshot through the live chat or by replying to your order email. Activation problems are covered by our refund policy: contact us within 30 days of purchase and, if we cannot get the license activated, we refund you.
