Buying a QuickBooks Desktop License Online: Safety Checklist
By the TaxUSA support team · Updated Oct 20, 2026 · 7 min read
What you are actually buying
When you buy QuickBooks Desktop 2024 online you receive two things: a set of activation codes (a license number and a product number) and access to the installer, the program file you run on your computer. Every safety check below is about one of those two things, or about the business selling them.
Check 1 — Where does the installer come from?
A genuine QuickBooks Desktop installer comes from Intuit's own servers — addresses ending in intuit.com (such as download.intuit.com) or downloads.quickbooks.com. On Windows you can confirm it after downloading: right-click the file, choose Properties → Digital Signatures, and look for Intuit Inc.
Walk away from anything described as "pre-activated", "cracked", "full version free", a torrent, or a ZIP file that includes a "patch" or "activator". Besides being illegitimate, these files are a well-known way to deliver malware — and QuickBooks is the program that holds your bank details, payroll and customer list.
Check 2 — Do the codes look right?
A QuickBooks Desktop license number is 15 digits, grouped 4-4-4-3. A product number is 6 digits, grouped 3-3. The codes are tied to one edition and one year, so the order should state exactly which edition and version they are for — "QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2024, 3 users", not just "QuickBooks".
After installing, press F2 in QuickBooks. A successful activation shows your license number followed by ACTIVATED. Do this on the day you receive your codes, while every refund window is still open.
Check 3 — Who is the seller?
You should be able to find the business behind the website: a legal notice with its name, a postal address, a phone number and an email address. Independent resellers should say plainly that they are not Intuit. A site that uses Intuit's logo as if it were Intuit itself, or that hides who runs it, is a warning sign.
Check 4 — What happens if activation fails?
Read the refund policy before paying, not after. Look for three things: a clear time window, the situations that qualify (activation failure should always be one), and how refunds are paid back. Vague promises with no written policy are worth nothing when something goes wrong.
Check 5 — How are you paying?
Pay by credit or debit card through a recognised payment processor. Card payments come with dispute rights that protect you if goods are not delivered. Be wary of sellers who push gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or "friends and family" payments for software — those methods are popular with scammers precisely because they cannot be reversed.
Check 6 — Can you reach a person before you pay?
Ask a pre-sale question through the chat or by email — for example, which edition suits your business. A real seller answers with something specific. Silence, or a copy-pasted sales pitch, tells you how support will look after you have paid.
Red flags in one list
- A price far below every other seller, with no explanation.
- No legal notice, address or phone number.
- Installers hosted on file-sharing sites instead of Intuit's servers.
- Codes delivered as a screenshot or a text message, with no order record or invoice.
- No written refund policy.
- Payment requested by gift card, crypto or wire transfer.
How TaxUSA handles each check
We think a store should be able to answer every one of these openly, so here is how we do it:
- Installer: the download link in your order email points to Intuit's own servers for your exact edition.
- Codes: your license and product numbers arrive in a PDF with your order, together with a short video walkthrough; your invoice is attached to the same email.
- Identity: our business details are in our legal notice and on our about page. TaxUSA is an independent reseller and is not affiliated with Intuit Inc.
- Refunds: if a license cannot be activated or does not work as described, contact us within 30 days of purchase and we will fix it or refund you — the full terms are in our refund policy.
- Payment: card checkout through Stripe.
- Support: live chat on every page and email at support@taxusa.shop, before and after you buy.
