QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2024 (Mac Plus): Complete Guide

What QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2024 is
QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus 2024 is the Mac edition of QuickBooks Desktop: a native macOS application that you install on your own Mac, with your company file stored on your own drive. It is not the browser-based QuickBooks Online, and it is not the Windows program running in a compatibility layer. For Apple-based businesses that want standalone accounting software they install once, it is the edition built for them.
Will it run on your Mac?
Intuit's published requirements for QuickBooks Mac Plus 2024:
- macOS 12 (Monterey) or later.
- An Intel or Apple-silicon processor — M-series MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis are supported.
- 2 GB of RAM minimum, 4 GB recommended, and 250 MB of free storage plus space for your company file.
- An internet connection for activation, updates and online features.
To check your macOS version, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
What Mac Plus handles well
Mac Plus covers the core bookkeeping a small business runs every week: invoices and estimates, receiving payments, bills and vendor payments, bank and credit-card reconciliation, sales tax, and the standard financial reports such as profit and loss and balance sheet. It looks and behaves like a Mac app, with Mac menus and keyboard shortcuts, and it supports up to three users.
What it does not do
Being clear about the limits saves a disappointed purchase:
- No Windows-only editions. The industry editions, Enterprise's capacity and role-based permissions, and the larger Windows report libraries are not part of the Mac app.
- No more than three users. A larger team that needs to be in the file together should look at the Windows editions.
- Windows QuickBooks cannot open a Mac company file directly — you convert it first (see below).
Working with an accountant who uses Windows
This is the most common question from Mac owners, and the answer is that it works well with one extra step:
- Mac to Windows: in QuickBooks for Mac, choose File → Back Up to QuickBooks for Windows. This creates a backup that QuickBooks Desktop for Windows can restore.
- Windows to Mac: in QuickBooks for Windows, the accountant uses File → Utilities → Copy Company File for QuickBooks Mac, and you open the result in Mac Plus.
Some features exist on only one platform, so expect minor differences after a conversion. Most Mac owners keep the books on the Mac all year and send a converted copy at tax time.
Why not run Windows QuickBooks on a Mac?
On an Apple-silicon Mac, running Windows means running Windows for ARM inside a virtual machine. Intuit does not support QuickBooks Desktop 2024 for Windows on ARM processors, emulators or virtual environments, so that setup leaves you on your own if something breaks. Mac Plus avoids the problem entirely.
Setting up Mac Plus 2024
- Download the installer from the link in your TaxUSA order email, or from Intuit's Download QuickBooks Desktop page with United States, QuickBooks Mac Desktop and 2024 selected.
- Open the downloaded disk image and drag QuickBooks into your Applications folder.
- Launch QuickBooks and, when the registration window appears, enter the license number and product number from your license PDF exactly as written.
- Create a new company or open your existing file. If the file comes from an older QuickBooks for Mac, make a backup first — QuickBooks 2024 upgrades the file, and the upgraded file will not open in the older version.
- Install updates when QuickBooks offers them, so you are on the latest 2024 release.
Your license email also links to a short video walkthrough of the Mac setup.
